Two Hibakusha (survivors of Japan's atomic bomb attacks) describe their experiences surviving the blast near ground zero and its terrible aftermath in Hiroshima. (#16446)

Source: University of California Television

I'm guessing our society doesn't pay much attention to the victims & survivors of the atomic bombs because our country is the one that dropped them, much unlike the movies & attention we pay to the victims & survivors of the Holocaust since we are portrayed as their liberators.

Sorry if you get spammed several times with this, but don't worry, I'm only putting this out there once. You have to register to vote, but the winners get $10K for their idea, most of which are altruistic ones. So I figure why not?

A human being is part of the whole, called by us "universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive.

--Albert Einstein, 1954

* It's interesting that our society places Albert Einstein on this pedastal, and if he said something, that somehow proves their point. And yet you don't hear his quotes like this one nearly as often as his "imagination" ones or E=MC^2 (which there is a lot more to). Our society's relationship with Einstein seems to be, as my husband says, "If Einstein said it, it's right, unless it has to do with compassion."

Go HERE to view and share your ideas on any issue facing the new administration, then rate or comment on other ideas. The best rated ideas will rise to the top -- and be gathered into a Citizen's Briefing Book to be delivered to President Obama after he is sworn in.

Global Warming: Nation Under Siege

First Air: 12/10/2007
57 minutes

The rapid depletion of fossil fuels and the rising sea level from the warming of the earth's atmosphere are converging to dramatically alter our future. Edward Mazria, founder of Architecture 2030, unveils a new study of sea level rise showing fly-over 3D images depicting potentially calamitous coastal and national impacts.

Aaron and I were staying at my aunt's house for Thanksgiving and came across the UCTV channel. This awesome lecture was being aired and its awesomeness cannot be put into words. Instead of watching What Not To Wear for an hour, watch this instead.

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
